We are looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to cover a maternity contract, for our Cardiff and Swansea offices.

Our Business Development team (Support Unit) are seeking a Business Development Manager (BDM) to cover a period of maternity leave within their Wales based team. The role will therefore be based in either Swansea or Cardiff but frequent travel between both offices will be required, as well as occasional travel to the firm's other office locations, outside events and other adhoc off-site meetings.

This role will be offered on a fixed term contract basis (duration likely to be 6 months initially) and will be considered on a full-time basis.

JOB PURPOSE

The role exists to ensure the successful development of the firm's practice areas and market sectors, specifically Built Environment, Higher and Further Education, Dispute Management including Debt Recovery and Insolvency, Procurement, Retail, Social Housing, Energy, Private Sector Wales, Public Sector Wales and South Wales region and assisting in other areas as demand dictates. This will include the acquisition of new clients and the extension of relationships with existing clients to achieve a greater flow of work for all disciplines within the firm.

KEY DUTIES AND CONTRIBUTIONS (COMPETENCIES)

  • The BDM will be responsible alongside the practice area leader (PAL) or sector group leader for the marketing budget for the Practice Area.
  • Define costed programmes for inclusion in the Budget and manage within the approved cost allocation
  • Working with the Practice Area Leaders (PAL) to develop and implement 3 year Business Plan, Guided by the Business Plan, develop a Marketing/Business Development Plan
  • Become knowledgeable about the other firms with similar practices, their service offerings, clients, pricing, and marketing methods
  • Conduct research into the industry and/or key targets for the practice area or market sector to identify the opportunities that exist, the current service providers, and the personnel who are key to winning the business
  • Maintain a current awareness of relevant issues affecting businesses and have the ability to think through how these will translate into opportunities for existing services or new offerings the firm could provide
  • Develop with the Partners strategies for increasing our share of the available business from targeted clients
  • Establish excellent working relationships and personal credibility with the partners and other lawyers working for clients of the practice areas or market sectors
  • Through liaison with other BDM's and Practice Area Leaders (PAL's) build up a thorough knowledge of the firm's capabilities to enable these to be conveyed to potential clients
  • Prepare materials for presentation to targeted clients outlining the firm's capabilities in the areas we are seeking to win work and assist in formal tenders where appropriate
  • Take part in the development and effective use of the firm's branding
  • Assist with the development of website structure, functions and content
  • Visit targeted clients/contacts with the Partners to develop relationships and open up opportunities for additional work
  • Liaise with the firms PR consultant to ensure articles appear in relevant publications
  • Ensure lawyers within the practice area or market sector Area are alive to the opportunities for raising profile. Achieve an average of four news items and/or articles per month on topics relevant to the industry
  • Oversee and manage BDE and BDE responsibilities.
  • Be an active BD team member effective in contributing to firmwide BD management and ideas contribution
  • Organise and manage Partner meetings
  • Attend industry and networking events and dinners.
  • Use of the firms data management system to produce reports on figures and services provided for sector/area meetings, events, publications etc
  • Track progress in growing revenues in practice areas and market sectors
  • Maintain on a twelve month rolling basis an events calendar for the various Practice Areas and ensure this is communicated to the Events personnel within the Marketing team

DIMENSIONS

The position is Wales based - so travelling between Swansea and Cardiff will be a regular requirement, as well as travelling on occasions to our Bristol, Reading and Oxford offices.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Have 5-7 years experience within Marketing/Business Development of which three years should have been within the financial or professional services sector
  • Have experience of working with professionals and an understanding of the issues facing companies in dealing with their requirements
  • Have a track record of growing new business
  • Be an excellent team player
  • Have excellent people management skills to facilitate working within the firm with the lawyers and externally with existing and new clients
  • Share the firm's Vision for the future and operate to the values we have agreed
  • Be results oriented
  • Be a self-starter with the confidence to work alongside partners and to participate in sales pitches to clients
